METHODOLOGY

In the “good driver” profile, NerdWallet averaged insurance estimates for males and females who have good credit scores and no violations or tickets. The analysis was based on 5-10 of the top insurance companies in each state. smaller insurance companies were as well as long as rates are available. Liberty Mutual and its subsidiaries were not included in our analysis because rates weren’t available.

For policies that provide full coverage we applied these coverage limitations:

  • $100 bodily injury liability per person.
  • 300,000 liability for bodily injuries per incident.
  • $50,000 for property damage liability per accident.
  • $100,000 in uninsured motorist coverage per person.
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist coverage per accident.
  • Collision insurance with a deductible of $1,000.
  • Complete coverage with an annual deductible of $1,000.

In states that required it additional coverages, minimum requirements were included. Certain policies provide additional protection at the discretion of the insurer.

We utilized the 2019 Toyota Camry L for all drivers and assumed that there would be 12,000 annual miles and then we looked at the rates of drivers aged 20 to 60 years old, in ten-year increments. We made the same assumptions as for the other driver profiles With the following exceptions:

  • For drivers who require minimal coverage, we have adjusted the above numbers so that they reflect the minimum coverage required by the law of the state.
  • We have changed the credit rating from “good” to”poor” according to the insurance company to determine rates for those with poor credit.
  • For drivers who had one accident at fault we have added a single at-fault accident that occurred just six months ago, and resulted in $10,000 of property damage, but no bodily injury claims.
  • For drivers who have a DUI we have included a single DUI violation that took place in the last six months.

We examined drivers who are 35 years old to determine the least expensive company overall, the least expensive company with minimum coverage, and the most affordable company for those with low credit in states where credit history is utilized to determine rates. We studied drivers aged 20 years old to find the most affordable business for young drivers.

These are rates that are generated by Quadrant Information Services. Your rates may differ.
